Expand the functionality and total number of surface masks. Right now we can create as many Outside masks as we want, but we are limited to a single Inside mask. Plus, if you have an inside mask, you cannot add an outside mask, and vice versa. Please give us the ability to do multiple Inside and Outside masks with no limitations.
Completely agree! It doesn't make sense that they don't behave similarly to non-destructive boundaries. I don't want to have to punch holes in my surface using boundaries just for my plan view to look good. If one tries to make tunnel plan and profile drawings in more urban environment with lots of buildings, you don't want contours showing where there is actually a building, but there still needs to be a EG line unless we know of basements we need to draw in.
I have many projects with multiple retaining walls that I would like to mask the contours through. We use data shortcuts into our sheet files, and are only able to create one Mask. It sucks.
1+ I wish Surface boundaries were as simple to manipulate as Hatch boundaries are via Select, Pick points, etc. from contextual ribbon.
That said, have you tried applying a single, all-inclusive Hide boundary, then add multiple Show boundaries?
I do this for stormwater/floodplain & earthwork analysis exhibits, where I select multiple ponds for the Show boundaries - not sure if this will work with overall Hide, multiple Show, and tertiary Hide boundaries (for punching holes at buildings, etc.).
This would be so helpful! Here is the problem. We have a "design" proposed surface file where the surface is created. For a subdivision, feature lines are added for the building pads. If there is a basement, we drop the feature lines for the basement. If there is a garage on the first floor, we have to put in a feature line for the garage since there is no basement under the garage. This causes contours to run through the buildings. We then have to add hide boundaries to hide those contours.
We data reference that surface to do our earthwork analysis. Unfortunately, the earthwork doesn't read any information in the hide boundaries which causes problems with our earthworks. So we have to go and uncheck all of the hide boundaries from the original surface definition, rebuild the surface, save the file, synchronize the surface in our earthwork file and then promote the surface into our earthwork file. We then go back to the original proposed surface and recheck all of the hide boundaries in the surface definition, rebuild the surface, and save the file.
Since we also data reference the original proposed surface into a "work" drawing that is xreferenced into our "plot" sheets, it would be nice if we could create masks for each building on the data referenced surface.

I agree on the ability to apply multiple inside masks. We typically have multiple buildings on a site and need the ability to hide the contours without removing the surface for our volume calcs. I am still not seeing this feature in 2024 Civil 3d.
Yes, that's true it doesn't work for data shortcut surfaces. You would have to add the multiple "hide" surface boundaries to the actual surface itself.
Unfortunate that this has not been implemented yet. Currently working on a site where there are multiple segmented areas of grading and to my dismay, I found I was capped at only one mask. Please add this feature
