If the command requires saving file, offer chance to save it!

If the command requires saving file, offer chance to save it!

There are a number of tasks/commands that the file is saved immediately before running the command (such as CREATECROPPEDSURFACE or creating shortcuts).  Currently, it just puts up a dialog telling me that the file needs saved first.  The only option is close the dialog.  Then I have to save it myself and then restart the command.

It seems to me that the dialog should tell me the file needs saved and offer the chance to save it and then run the command.

This is a great idea, but the timing isn’t quite right for development consideration in the near term. As such, it is being put on the back burner to be re-visited at a later date. Please continue to comment and add your support.

Hi everyone,

I'd like to revisit this idea (and we're tracking it internally as CIVIL-38422). Based on this thread and my own testing, the following commands are affected:

  • CREATECROPPEDSURFACE
  • IMPORTSTYLESANDSETTINGS
  • CREATESHEETS
  • CREATESECTIONSHEETS

Are there others that tell you to save the drawing, but don't let you do so?

@TimYarris

The two commands for creating sheets and section sheets don't require that the drawing be saved prior to running the command, they require that the drawings be saved during the command. When adding sheets to a sheet set, the layouts have to be in the saved version of the drawing and as the command both creates the layouts and adds them to the sheets, saving just prior to running the commands doesn't change anything. What I would like for these commands is a notice in advance that says something like, "This command will save the drawing, press OK to continue or CANCEL to cancel" or perhaps a third option to save a copy of the file, not exactly sure how that would work though.

@TimYarris as for the other two commands, I can understand why the cropped surface command might require the drawing to be saved because you don't want to create a cropped surface from a surface that doesn't exist (I create the surface, crop it, don't save). As Peter mentioned previously, checking to see if the surface has been changed should be enough and not require the entire drawing to be saved.

As for the import styles and settings, I have absolutely no idea why this one requires the drawing to be saved prior to running the command. It's kind of silly in my opinion.

Thanks, @BrianHailey  -- all  helpful feedback (as always).

If anyone else has comments (or additional commands to add), please post them here.

Hello!

I came to the ideas forum to see if anyone has started on this supper-annoying thing.

DOn't wanna step ove anyones ideas, but i fully support it. There's a ton of situations that would be avoided if Autodesk could (dunno how hard it is?) implement that pan, zoom, regen and autosave actions do not require a save. Cause, you know, nothing changed? :leicht_lächelndes_Gesicht:

Whoever, and theres a hefty number of us, works with civil, already has a healthy habbit of hitting save every 5 commands because of stuff.

My 5 cents on the topic, and a vote up.

Cheers,

Iggy
