FeatureLine from Surface

FeatureLine from Surface

This is one of my wishes in the top of my list.

We can get a dynamic featureLine from a Corridor but we cannot get a dynamic featureLine from a Surface.

Imagine the following scenario:

I have a composite surface (with several pasted surfaces) that I name it "Surf1" .

I draw a featureLine on the surface and I get all the elevations of that surface for the vertex of the featureLine.

I add the featureLine as a breakline in another surface.

If I modify Surf1, I have to do every time "get elevations from surface" to update the elevations of the featureLine, so we need a dynamic featureLine from a surface.

Perhaps, it should be a new type of featureLine which is dynamic (automatic), it could be called: Surface FeatureLine.

In the settings for the creation of this featureLine and option about if he want remove all old elevations points and add a new elevation points every time that the surface changes.

It would be nice if, when you assign elevations from a surface on a feature line, there was an option to keep those elevations dynamic with the surface.

It is just this idea also accepted.

I want to dig a little more in this idea.

This new feature should allow us adding more than one surface, it means that in the dialog box we can select more than one surface and the priority buttons to stablish a priority among selected surfaces.

If I have a partial overlapped surface on another one, then the elevation is determined from the surface with more priority.

This is very useful with feature lines to generate gradings between 2 corridors in a out ramp region.

Instead of selecting several surfaces, I know that we could paste/merge them in a new surface and use just that last surface but I would prefer not to create this new surface.

@joantopo Sorry for posting the same thing as you. (I did a quick tag search before posting but wasn't thorough enough, apparently.)

I upvoted yours.

The workaround @doni49 posted in your comments is helpful, for sure. There's a Sincpac command that creates an alignment and profile from a featureline with a couple clicks so making both of those from a FL and getting a new FL dynamic to the profile, dynamic to the surface, isn't all that bad.

This new object "surface feature line", must have this box to add several surfaces, then, we can up/down some surface to change the priority.

This is interesting because we can take the elevation of the vertex from several surfaces (we avoid to paste several surfaces in one surface).

Moreover, in case that some surfaces are overlapping each other, we can stablish the priority with the buttons (up/down).

In case that some vertex doesn´t have elevation from any surface, then we can stablish a default elevation such as 0.

Why was my idea moved to and buried in this thread?

It's not even relevant..

Fred,

We're in the process of grouping threads in IdeaStation, and when ideas are similar we are starting to group them. When we do, the unique Kudos are added together (moving the combined idea up the list). In this case, your request was around 275 out of 1300 and the new combined idea is at 43.

Your request was for feature lines to have a datum depth parameter, and that fits in with some of featureline work we are looking at including a draped featureline and feature lines with depth.

Ok, if it's accepted (which I thought it already was), I'm fine.

However my idea involves earthwork and an attempt to make site grading and subsequent earthwork balancing more feasible in Civil 3D, and know one would suspect anything like that would be in this idea thread from the thread subject topic you just put this under now.

I too fail to see the connection between a dynamic link from a surface to a featureline and a featureline with a depth parameter. But if both are going to be implemented I won't complain.

This falls into the C3D R2018 "Relative Feature Line" improvement. That'll enable you to specify a surface that the Feature Line will remain draped. Let me know if the core requirement is not addressed - if there are additional improvements that would make sense please add them into new Ideas on this site.

Thanks

@dsimeone

It is really good but one of my premises was precisely the "dynamic intermediate points". This is not still covered.

This is my new idea about it:

We need the relative feature lines to automatically remember a change in vertical offset from the surface as the result of an edit by any one of the Featureline Edit tools, without having to go into the Elevation Editor and do all the "Elevation Derived From" granular editing to change the various points new vertical offsets back to Relative.

We could use a right-click menu option for quickly turning a featureline into the relative modality, and for quickly removing a featureline from relative modality...

Thanks

Please make sure any new requests are added as new Ideas so that we can track them. Thanks JoanTopo for the suggestion.

Cheers,
