Civil3D - General Performance

Civil3D - General Performance

I am not sure where to actually place this topic. I know CAD is strickly dependent on the machine that the user is using. The stronger the machine; the better performance. There are times in Civil3D I am trying to either work with Pipe Networks or matching properties of other Civil3D Labels and I get a 2 Second (And sometimes more) LAG before I can move my cursor / mouse. This also happends with hatching. The only fix I have is to completely shut down CIvil3D for 10 seconds and reopen it back up and the performance is back to normal. I am assuming its a RAM issue.

Is this a typical with other users? Our company we have alot of this happening. I know there are tons of variables from the network, to processors.

Thanks for any feedback.

Is there an idea here?  If not, it should be in the discussion board.

FYI, there's a diminishing return on hardware investment - there isn't a linear relationship between "stronger hardware" and "better performance".  Management of data and drawings has an impact, especially with larger projects.

There are several issues that may be causing the lag you see.  One thing to check would be the amount of information in your TEMP directory.  As the software is processing a command, it may need to write information to a temporary storage location to recall later in the process.  I have found that keeping that directory cleaned out tends to help the performance of my machine.

I agree with dgorsman's comment that data management is essential to the performance of the software.  One thing that a lot of users do not realize is that when you change the properties of an object or label, or even switch from model space to paper space, the software regenerates the entire model.  Any dependent labels (all of them if they are Civil 3D labels instead of AutoCAD text entities) get checked against the model.  If you have multiple viewports in a drawing the software regenerates the model for each viwport in paper space to make sure that all data is up to date.

Another thing to check is for circular references on XREFs, empty text objets and zero length objects.  These will slow the drawing down tremendously on open, save and close commands.  You can use the _PURGE cpmmand to check for the latter.

yeah -purge or _purge can solve a lot of problems.

I agree that there are a number of particular operations in civil 3D that cause significant performance problems. But @dgorsman is right, you defiantely need to be more specific. For example like my post here about performance when using corridor region grips..

Civil3D 2015 performance is terrible compared to "pure" autocad 2015 - so it's definetly a Civil issue.

If I were in charge of our IT we would have changed software instantly, becuase 2 second wait times is unacceptable.

In my company we need to have alot of individual layers (2000-3000) in our template in order for drawings to generate properly. It turns out that autocad/civil loads all these layers in memory if you have selected their layer group filter in the layer manager. to fix this, make a new "empty" layer filter group in the layer manager and select it. This clears your computer memory alot and for me the speed in model/paper-space is significantly improved.
