Allow Pipe-to-Pipe connections without the need of null structures

Allow Pipe-to-Pipe connections without the need of null structures

When connecting a pipe to another pipe, Civil 3D inserts null structures. This results in breaking apart the pipe where the new pipe is connected to. This behaviour results in 'breaking up' the dimensions of the pipe, while in reality it remains one pipe.

So in short, the software breaks it up in 2 pipes, where in reality it remains as one pipe. So the quantities do not show the realistic values.

The more I get into stormwater design, the more frustrating I find this problem.  Most users draw their catchpit / drain leads as polylines or pipes that hover over the main pipe to avoid breaking it.  If we want to do complete stormwater analysis in Civil 3D we need the ability to add saddle connections to pipes.

It seems like the development team are doing a lot of work on stormwater analysis in Civil 3D which is great.  But I think this limitation should be one of the first things they need to address.

I find the need for this for cast in place box culverts. I have a 400ft run that has a 20° horizontal bend, but no vertical. If I add a structure there, Stormwater, SSA, and other hydro programs want to model the structure.

It would also be helpful to have the ability to set the slope of discontinuous pipes (pipes that are broken up by null structures, but actually act as the same pipe) similar to how we can adjust the slopes of feature lines. I want to straight grade from inlet structure to outlet and just automatically update inverts in between!

Project Explorer within C3D can do this for you 😉 Here you can edit Pipe Runs...
