XREF not plotting or "select-able" in viewport

XREF not plotting or "select-able" in viewport

Anonymous
Not applicable

I have an .DWG XREF Overlay in a drawing that is visible and can be selected in model space. However, when a viewport is activated and I try to select the XREF, it is as if it's an image and cannot be selected. Also, when trying to plot the sheet in question, all the elements of the XREF are not visible in the plot.

This only occurs with a certain XREF, the others are operating just fine. All XREFs in drawing are on "0" layer. Can't seem to get to the bottom of the issue without having to re-attach the XREF in question which resets layer-states, etc.

Any help appreciated.

Do you have layer 0 locked/set to noplot/frozen inside the viewport by chance?

I do not. Only thing that is frozen/locked, is a layer frozen within the viewport, which is within a block, located in the XREF drawing (Layer=>Block=>XREF=>VP). Nothing out of the ordinary that I can see.

After further investigation, this phenomena is only occurring on one sheet within the drawing, and in multiple viewports on that same sheet. I have this XREF referenced in other sheets in this drawing and it is working just fine in those instances. It also seems to occur after plotting. Everything will be normal, I will plot (once, maybe twice), and then this issue will start to occur.

I've went through all my normal sanity checks, but this feels like a new CAD/C3D 2020 issue, as it has occurred to me in two (2) separate drawings since making the switch to 2020. Only fix so far is to detach XREF and Re-attach. Unload and Re-load doesn't work.

I had the same issue while using AutoCAD 2020. i noticed this problem after I installed the "AutoCAD_2020.1_Update_64bit" update. so I removed said update, but the problem still remained.

We have some folks here that are on 2018 LT and some on 2019 full and I took over this project from a person who took a medical leave. I test the newest version of cad before we turn it loose to everyone else, but haven't seen this issue when the project is started in AutoCAD 2020.

but I have found a quick fix when I can NO longer select an xref (cant snap to anything, cant freeze anything, ect... ect...)

I copy the viewport move it to the side then select both viewports, moving both at the same time and holding a common corner of the copied viewport to place it exciting where the other one was.  redrawing viewport only worked for a while and so did reinserting problemed xref.

tip, use layer states manager to help save your viewport layers states if you need to.

this was a no-hassle fix for me and hope it works for you.

good luck

UPDATE.

the coping of a viewport only worked when a certain layer in the base drawing was not frozen.

once this layer was thawed the xref worked fine again.

We have the same problem. People in office with multiple versions of CAD, those with CAD 2020 cannot select certain XREFs in the viewports (they can be selected in modelspace), and they do not plot. XREFs are on correct layer and plot when an older version of CAD is used.

Hi Sophia,

I saw the release notes for the 2020.1.1 update, but it appears to not be available yet through the Desktop App or from my Autodesk account.

Be sure all updates are loaded: C3D 2020.4 Update was put out last week (assuming you are using 2020 and not 2021).

Thanks.  I will have to contact my IT department to get that update as it doesn't show up in my account.  Hopefully that fixes these issues.
