I would guess there are basically two types
Program crash and error traps do not have time to re-set FILEDIA is a classic example
The second unknown applications modifying you environment behind the scene. For example you may be modifying your space but your system administrator may be running setup files so he knows everyone's setup

@Anonymous - You can't stop it from happening but you can protect yourself and have an extra reset button by using the SYSVARMONITOR.
