Why is latitude/longitude coordinates reserved to only cogo points...

...and not for practically every osnap option if we have to have our drawings set to a coordinate system? Fixing this would be the simplest solution for everyone who needs to include a lat/long label for anything in Civil 3D.

My rant below. Disregard if TLDR.

I cant bring in anything from a GIS source or use the geolocation maps without having a preset coordinate system so why are lat/long coordinates so difficult without jumping through hoops in Civil 3D? One would think this would be a simple fix.

Hi Catherine,
I'm not understanding. A screen shot or two illustrating the problem would be helpful.

Simple... finding the lat/long of an arbitrary point in a georeferenced drawing should be as simple as using the ID command. So, why are COGO points the only objects that can report back a lat/long coordinate?

This was the crux of my previous reply that disappeared into the ether when I posted. Trust me you did not want the TLDR rant.

AutoCAD works in XYZ coordinates. Latitude and Longitude are angular. These are not Planar Coordinate Systems. State Plane Coordinates are. Civil 3D needs to refer to a planar coordinate system but can convert to LatLon.

You don't need COGO points. You can use Civil 3D Note labels to place Lat/lon labels.

Catherine,
To expand a little on @tcorey Tim's response, Vanilla AutoCAD doesn't know what to do with Lats and Longs, and so dumb AutoCAD objects, even in a Civil 3D or Map 3D drawing, can't display Lats and Longs.

I've had some challenges with Lats and Longs in civil, especially trying to import GPS data into civil 3D. Besides labeling, another tool that may be of some use for checking on things is the "Inquiry Tool" in the Analyze tab, and select the point inverse option, then you can click in model space for point 1 coordinate as many times as you want and it will tell you its lat and lon.

The GEOMARKPOINT command can be used (even in plain AutoCAD with a proper GeoLocation) to place point labels that include Lat/Long info when listed.  However, I don't believe DataExtraction supports the object.
