Unable to remove vertex from a polyline

If I create a polyline by clicking in three places and then choosing Close, I have a polyline with 4 vertices. If I then drag one of the vertices on top of another, I can no longer separate them. Hovering over the ones which are doubled up does not allow Remove Vertex, and dragging the grip moves both vertices.

The question is, if this happens how do you get the vertices separate again, (or merge them to become 1)?

Correct, doing the right-click menu to remove vertex will not work. Do the old-fashioned (I still do a lot of stuff in old-fashioned ways) PEDIT Command, 'Edit Vertex'. You'll see an "X" float over the current vertex, you can 'Move' that Vertex at which point you will then be able to Remove it. Straighten works, but it takes a couple of extra clicks in the right order.

I would strongly suggest you do not collapse vertices as described.
