Unable to merge Grid and Tin Surfaces

I have two surfaces I am trying to merge:

-a large Grid surface created from a DEM (A clipped raster created in GIS from USGS ArcGrid data), and

-a smaller TIN surface from flown LIDAR (that I would like to paste over the DEM)

It appears that the two types of surface data (TIN and GRID) are incompatible. Why is this? My impression is that a grid surface is simply a more organized TIN surface, and I have assumed (incorrectly, perhaps) that a surface is a surface and they should speak the same language.

In short, I am having difficulty figuring out how best to bring these two types of surfaces together. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Perhaps extract the border of the tin and use it as an internal boundary for the grid surface.

Or, make a new empty surface and paste in the grid surface and then the tin surface.
