Surface - Editting points

When I am editing points in a surface, I see some icons that just show an X and others that show an X with a square. What do the X with squares mean? Also I have seen some with a circle I believe, what do those mean and how are they different from one another? Attached is a screenshot of the square one

Also when editing these points is there an easier way to see the elevation of each of these points? Right now I have to click it and see the elevation and decide if I want to change it.

I do believe those with the square, are calculated points. For example if you add a boundary and you leave the option checked on that says "Non-destructive breakline", then at each point where a triangle crosses the boundary, one of these points is generated.

Check the POINTS tab under the surface style dialog box
