Surface Contour Labels showing with border in Xref

In my Civil 3D base my surface contour label groups look good. They have a background mask as desired. All is good!

... but in the AutoCAD file where this Civil 3D file is Xref'ed the labels show with a border but no background mask. They plot this way as well.

Kind of hard to see in the screenshots above given the colors but the point is that through the Xref process a mask is being converted to a border display-wise at least.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance

Does the regular AutoCAD have the C3D object enabler installed?

C3D objects will do this when opening in regular Autocad. You could try exploding the contour labels in the xref, or save the xref file to an earlier dwg format such as acad2000.

I do this all the time and never had this issue. I recently updated to 2020 but I guess I hadn't installed the Object Enablers yet. Thank you!
