Subassembly Composer custom variable types

How do you create custom variable types in Subassembly Composer? For example, in the example Enumeration Example.pkt, there is a "BarrierType" input parameter. The drop down shows all the standard parameters (Interger, Double, String, Grade, etc.) including the BarrierType parameter.

I'm trying to make my own selectable curbs using the Switch. I get the error: "Expression must be set before the Flowswitch in Flowchart 'Flowchart' can be used."
