Hello Community,

 

Recently I have been familiarizing myself with the road construction tools in autocad civil 3d. Ive found using assemblies ( did it by hand in the past) can make life so much easier.

 

Anyway, I will be doing a complete reconstruction a residential roadway. The road has been repaved so many times that the sidwalk is actually level with the road. Currently there is just a sidewalk and a crowed, 2 lane road that meets property (grass) at one end, and meets a sidewalk at the other ( there is no evidence of a real gutter, but it may have existed at one point). I have gps points for the following lines on the road: centerline, bottom shoulders, and sidewalk.

 

We would like to completely reconstruct the road by removing and replacing both the .3m subbase gravel and asphalt overlay. My question is: what would be the best approach to use for modeling and calculating volumes, cut & fill ect.. for this type of project. So far, I think the milloverlaylevel #2 looks promising, but what would you guys recommend as a sub-assembly or approach to this project? Maybe a custom assembly? I would like to get a decent idea before I research a particular area of the program or get too deep into a model that just wont work for me.

I think my approach would be to:

 

  1. Create a stripped ground surface with feature lines based on the points you said you have. Just connect the points with the feature lines, and drop them to the relavent stripped ground elevation and daylight it to the existing ground surface.
  2. Create a proposed alignment, and sample the resulting stripped ground surface for your profile
  3. Create a profile using the stripped ground surface as a guide to minimize cut/fill
  4. Create a corridor with the road structure specifications.
  5. Create a sub-grade surface from the corridor
  6. Create a volume surface between the stripped ground and sub-grade of the proposed corridor to obtain quantities.
