How can I remove an object I just selected from a selection set?   I can't find the setting that allows this. Is it some combination of items check under the selection modes in the options menu?

Hold Shift and select the object.

This will not work if AutoCAD Map image selection setting is on. See MAPIOPTIONS command, General tab. Turn off Shift+Left Click Image Select.

If you're inside a command, selecting objects, and at the Select Objects prompt, you can type R <enter> and you will be prompted to Remove Objects. This removes them from the selection set. To go back to adding to the selection set, type A <enter>.

Thanks, turning off the MAPIOPTION did the trick.
