Reference template auto attach with qnew

So we're playing around with a concept of having a reference template automatically attached to a new dwg with qnew (or simply clicking the +).

The reason for this idea is when you make a change in our base dwt (that gets used in every dwg) is that when it's attached like this to a dwg those changes immediately get pushed out and you can simply just reload it.

However, obviously you can't reference attach a dwt to a dwt and you lose the simplicity when you tell users to manually open a specific dwg each time they need a new dwg that already has the base dwt reference attached.

Any ideas?

Hi @alongXDCZH,

A couple of options I can think of here. Put your new company template in the same OOTB path for users to pick when they start a new session. This will be available via the NEW drawing command but the template will need to be chosen.

If you want it automatic through the + tab, then you can add the template name to the file path in the options, see below. This would have to be done manually for each user is my guess, or on install. Or, overwrite the default template with your new one, keeping the same default name.

Hi @alongXDCZH

You can reference a template in a template!

1. Create the template with Styles as desired (let's name this as "Styles Template")

2. Create a new blank drawing from the NEW command > click the menu button to create a new drawing with no template per screen capture

3. Reference the "styles template" in blank new drawing

4. Save the drawing, in the SAVE command, change the file extension to DWT (lets name this "Template with Ref")

5. Finally in the OPTIONS command, set the default template for QNEW to the "Template with Ref" created above

Hope this helps,

Thanks Ian, we've tried this method and yes it does work, however it does not allow for our dwt to be referenced attached to another dwg.

I will try this method again, but I think we tried this already. Once you save the dwg with a referenced template attached it won't allow a dwt to have another dwt attached to it. I'll try this again and get back to you. Thanks

Hi @alongXDCZH,
When  you say reference attach, are you referring to Xref or Attaching a Reference Template?

I just tried creating a New DWT file and Reference Attached a different DWT and saved, when I start a new session choosing the saved DWT, it pulls in the Referenced Attached template also.

attaching as a reference template, and your method DID work me! So thank you.

Not sure what we did yesterday that this method wasn't working for us, but today it did!

So, now when we click the "+" to start a new dwg, it opens a clean dwg with our "reference template.dwt" attached as a reference template (not as an attached xref)
