Ready to throw them all out the window...

I've about had enough.

Civil 3D has crashed on our users so many times I lost count long ago. It crashes changing layout tabs, it crashes when editing blocks, Sometimes it just crashes for the hell of it. First, it was 2023. Everyone came to me (I'm the CAD manager) asking me what I can do. I check their installation,  the drawings, the settings. All is as it should be. So I download 2025 - it's cutting edge, let's jump into it. Same problem - it froze two times in the space of 2 minutes. Same thing. Changing layouts and block editing. So I uninstalled that and downloaded 2024. Figured that was better anyway, since some of the 3rd party apps we use haven't rolled out versions for 2025 yet. Lo and behold, same *(*&*(^*(&(*) problem. Just had it freeze while editing a block, closed it and restarted, tried to change layouts and it froze again.

When the hell is autodesk going to start publishing answers instead of inane solutions like "run audit and recover" and "check your settings"?

Our installations are all spot on, everyone's updated, and all is as it should be.

It's Civil 3D, and IT IS COSTING US MONEY!

Anyone using it is making you a ton of money, and we deserve answers - NOW.

I tried editing a few blocks then switching between layouts. I didn't have any issues.

I did have freezes yesterday when I tried to delete a Reference Surface in Project Explorer.

Have you tried to duplicate the problem in an OOTB Template? I've found that older Templates can carry issues with them.

We tend to have issues when a drawing has hefty/many XREFs in it. Otherwise, we only get the occasional generic C3D crash (so not very frequent).

But, we NEVER run the "Latest and Greatest". There's usually problems (sometimes big, sometimes small). We're still using C3D 2023.

We also still primarily use Windows 10. Will probably have to upgrade to 11 soon. But our IT dept is really on-top of updates and identifying good/bad update versions. So hopefully your company has the same.

COULD BE a Civil 3D issue.. COULD BE a Windows issue.. COULD BE an add-in you're using.. COULD BE a network/server issue.. COULD BE a combination 😖 I hope you get it figured out though.

(agreed that Autodesk does not appear to be focused on their 'AutoCAD' products anymore. Since their big cloud push, hands in many other softwares, and the 'AI' craze.. they just seem to have pushed AutoCAD products to the side with mediocre updates)

Best,

~DD

I was in the midst of migrating from 2022 and rolling out 2024 for a company last fall. Then the CAD Manager went to AU and came back with the knowledge that 2025 is light years more efficient/stable/etc than 2024. So I shifted midstream to roll out 2025. They've been on it since December 2, 2024. Apart from some customizations that pointed to the 2024 standards that I had to correct, all has been smooth.

One thing you can try is opening a tutorial drawing and try the same techniques you mentioned and see if the freezing still occurs. You can find those files here:

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\<AutoCAD Version>\C3D\Help\Civil Tutorials\Drawings\

Is it possible to post a problematic drawing or project (if you're using DREFs)?

Thanks
Kevin

It sounds to me like your issue is corrupt drawings.  I would AUDIT your sheet, and audit the xrefs.

When you say it crashes changing layout tabs, it sounds to me like there is corrupt layout tabs/ viewports.  This is a known issue when using the Move / Copy Layout Tab, so I don't use it.  Copying or duplicating a layout corrupts some viewports with AutoCAD

When I hear this issue from users, they have created layout tab 1 then copied it to create 2,3,4,5 & 6.  When they create layout tab 7 something gets corrupted but you won't notice it now.  Then you copy 7 to create 8,9,10 and you have a problem.

You can try recreating these layout tabs by using this procedure.  I have not seen this procedure create corrupt layouts/viewports and it will often fix corrupt issues with existing ones.

1. Right Click on a layout tab, and select "From Template"

2. Select the .dwt or .dwg from "Select Template from file".  You can select the drawing you have open, just change the "files of type" to .dwg

3. Select the layout tab to import.

4. Once the layout tab is imported see if you have any issues when you switch to it.

I don't think the problem is the software.  I can't tell you how many times I have heard from people that the software is the problem, the issue almost always starts with the drawing.

Good Luck!  Let me know if I can help.
