Question about hovering over a surface that is an x-ref (Wanting Elevation tooltips)

Possibly a silly question...so my problem is I want to see two different surfaces elevations at the same time (EG and the PG), both of these surfaces are external referenced into my drawing.

I thought in the past I have done this with no problem. But in my dwg with xref's I can not get the elevation tooltips to come up when hovering over my surface(s). If I open up my basefile where the surface is located then I get those tooltips no problem.  I have tried to use the INQUIRY tool and the tool will not work on the drawing with the xref's, it says its Z coordinate is non-existent. But using the inquiry tool in the basefile works fine.

I'm pretty new to Civil3D so if this is a thing that is not possible and I thought I remembered it before I apologize. So is this possible to do with surfaces that are xref'd? The engineer is wanting to see both our Existing elevation and the Proposed elevation at a certain point within the surfaces at the same time. Thank you so much!

This is the tooltip I want to see for both of my surfaces..

I believe it would have to be a DRef not an Xref.

D-ref should certainly work.
X-ref might work. Check that it's working in the source drawing first. Then check in your host drawing with all layers thawed and on.

Unfortunately, yes. That is the only thing that worked for me. Sorry it took a minute for me to respond, I forgot to accept as solution. I appreciate your help!!
