We have a discussion at my work about using PURGE or -PURGE.
Is there such a thing as overusing this function regarding Civil 3D?
My understanding is that PURGE should be used in order to clean up a dwg before sending it to a client or co-workers. And The size is reduced too. For me this is more about good manners then a way to fix problems in the file!
Is using -purge in Civil 3D working file regularly any good idea? There are lots of layers and styles and blocks that are used by the software such as object layers, would not -purge just delete these?

Hi @Anonymous
Please see the following AKN links that discuss both options.
PURGE:
-PURGE
Both options remove unused/named objects (like blocks and layers) from the drawing, not Civil 3D-dependant layers associated with styles. If you want to remove a C3D-dependant layer, use LAYDEL command.
I agree it is good practice to clean-up drawings before distributing. We have a LISP that does a PURGE and a few other steps to streamline the dwg before sending it out. I guess it is up to you on how to implement a standard operating procedure for your firm.
I hope this helps.

@Anonymous,
If you are looking to clean civil 3d drawing for maintain speed and avoid hang, i would suggest you to Audit drawing time to time. and also use command PURGE AND_PURGE both.
If you are looking for unused civil 3d styles, settings, layers and blocks use command PURGESTYLES.
PURGESTYLES will remove all unused civil 3d styles, settings, layers and blocks. Hopefully this will fix your issue if not let me know.
You can also find this command under Manage Tab in civil 3d Ribbon.

Hi @Anonymous
The autocad purge command will delete unused autocad objects. It will not delete items that are used by civil 3d styles and setting because they are treated as being used.
the one advantage of using the -purge command (i.e. command line version of Purge) is that you can specifically purge the Reg Apps. This specific one is not available in the Purge dialog box, it purges xdata that Autocad creates behind the scenes these are not needed once the object is created, so good practice to always use -purge/regapp
here is a link about the regapps for additional info if you’re Interested
hope this helps,
