Projected Object Insertion Point Change

I typically insert a block into a profile to use as a reference point. I have upgraded to 2016. The point of insertion appears to have changed from the origin of the block to the center of the drawing within the block. For example...We'd turn a circle into a block and assign the top quadrant snap as the origin of the block. When projected into a profile the origin would follow the surface or profile assigned to the projection for elevation reference. It appears that is not the center of the block regardless of origin.

 

How do I change it back so we have a specified projection point?

I used to use this meathod, havent done it in a while but I would assume it's along the same lines.

 

Select the CAD block and click the Explode CAD Block editbutton. Select CAD> Points> Place Point from the menu, then move your mouse pointer over the part of the exploded CAD block that you would like to use as an insertion point when you move the CADblock.

It looks like that will change the origin of the block but not reset the projected object reference point to the origin of the block. The problem is that those two points no longer correlate. Previously the insertion point of the block would be the reference point on the profile view. If you projected an object into a profile view that had elevation 4955. the object projected object would display on the profile view with that insertion point at 4955. Now the center of the block is showing up at 4955 and the insertion point will be off in space at an irrelevant elevation on the profile view.

I think I am following you here. Out of curiosity where is the origin point of the block to begin with?

In this particular case we are using a circle to represent a crossing in the profile. We put the insertion point of the block (just a circle) at the top quad snap. We then place that block, using the insertion point, on the alignment at the location of the crossing. When you project it into a profile view for that alignment and choose the surface or a profile as the elevation in the projection, the insertion point (top quad in this case) used to match either the profile elevation or the surface elevation at that point on the alignment/profile. Now, the projected object re-centers so that the middle of the block, or circle in this case, is at the profile or surface elevation. We need it to go back so that we can represent a top of pipe elevation when designing the fittings on a waterline profile.

Okay so you are saying that this is first put into a PLAN view of a crossing and the projected into a PROFILE view of the object? If so how are you projecting the block into the profile view? Just another block insertion? 

 

Could you post some screenshots of what your doing?

Are you sure the projection style is using your block? Looks like a generic projection style.

Make the block a square to test.

The result is the same. Insertion point at the top middle snap for the block and projection elevation control point at the centroid/center of mass of the projected object. The attached has a split screen of the block in plan and the projection on the profile view, both selected so you can see the grips.

I dont have 16 but it works as expected in 14

We are experiencing this issue as well.  All of our Profile View-Projection Objects use the center of the block when viewed in 2016.  Open it in 2014 and they are back to using the original insertion point (in this case the bottom of the block).  But this is only happening with the profile views.  A projected object in a section view is working fine in both versions.

 

In the attached images the concrete "K-Rail" is the projected object.

After submitting this issue to Tecnical Support there is a work-around to resolve the display.

Basically Civil 3D 2015 & 2016 uses the centroid of the block and not the insertion for any block projection. This work-around makes the centroid and insertion point the same.

Hope this helps anyone looking for a solution until they fix the bug. Civil 3D 2017 is right around the corner so we will see.

My company just upgraded to 2017 over the weekend and I have noticed this problem.

 

Is the above workaround still the best method to fix this issue?

This fix doesn't work in 2017. The block (now the circle centroid) is still above the surface I selected for the elevation, and the offset is incorrect. I added the line to indicated the insertion point of the ROW marker and center of the circle. The offset is supposed to be 29.99', but the block comes in at 30.63'.

Hi,

I believe it is intended to use multiview blocks if projecting a block to profile view etc in the newer versions of Civil.
