Problems Impoort gis to autocad

Anonymous

Hello,

I am followed the steps from the following link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7HW6apnh3g on how to import gis data to autocad civil 3d 2012 but I am having problems getting it to work.

Background:

  1. D/l a shp file from the web (see attached file)
  2. Project needs to be setup to CA 83 state plane Zone 2 survey feet

Everything is good up to the point until I get to set alterations properties.

Usually working with files I would select the text button in the set properties alterations and I would see a file under the object data folder this time nothing.

I also tried filtering the query for just Sonoma county but no luck.

I appreciate if some has some time that they can take a look at this and let me know what is wrong.

Thanks

FAD,

I really don't know what I can add to Jason's excellent video. You might just have to watch it several times to absorb everything. He covers a LOT of ground.

In your shapefile folder, notice that there is a file named "shn2014v3_TenthPM.prj". Open it with a text editor like Notepad:

GEOGCS["GCS_North_American_1983",DATUM["D_North_American_1983",SPHEROID["GRS_1980",6378137.0,298.257222101]],PRIMEM["Greenwich",0.0],UNIT["Degree",0.0174532925199433]]

What I like to do first is Drag-n-Drop the Shapefile into a Blank drawing. This does the same thing as MapConnect, and you'll notice that C3D has automatically assigned a LL83 Coordinate System. Select the Feature, click the "Table" icon, and then you can see what kind of data is in the Shapefile:

FAD1.png

Notice that these are all points, tens of thousands of them, and they cover the entire state of California. Close the drawing. OK, so let's get started:

Step #1: Open a New, Blank Drawing and Assign a LL83 Coordinate System (Like the PRJ file).
Step #2: MapImport in your Shapefile, being sure to click on Data and then selecting Create Object Data, like this:

FAD2.png

Step #3: Save that drawing and then Close the drawing.

If you did that, then we can go on to the next step. If not, we gotta talk. If I knew exactly what you wanted to do, I could make you a Screencast. If you would make a Screencast we could see any mis-step instantly. The hardest part of helping on the Forum is trying to see what you see. And sometimes words are not enough.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your help I am not good with screencast so I explain the steps. Like I said, “I am good up to the point from your explanation and it imported lots of points

The next step I took is I create a new dwg file with the correct project setup and safe the file with a name.

I next followed the remaining steps of the video define query of attached drawing and did it for Sonoma County.

Now I get to the part where I want to import the pm so I click on alterations property button and then I click on the text button and change the font size to 7.0.

I next click the expression button and choose pm as an example but all I just want is just the number (ex. 35.5).

I next click ok which brings me to the property alteration expression table.

I next expand the object data folder and under the folder there should be a file but with mine nothing

When working with other gis files and importing it to autocad I always got a file under the object data folder.

Thanks

.

FAD,

Your Screeny shows your query is for "Elevation". I'm completely not understanding what you want to do. What do you want your final drawing to look like and show?

Are you trying to label those points with "PM" value, whatever that is? A nice Map Annotation Template will do just that. Drawing attached.

Hi Pointdump,

To clarify the screen shot shows what Jason got when he used elevations. I was using this as a explanation why I don't get this when I try to get my pm

like in your drawing.

If it is not a problem can I see a screencast showing how you did the define the query to get the Sonoma county pm. I have checked this a couple of times based on Jason video but I must have miss something.

I know the files are fairly large perhaps I did not give enough time to finish.

Thanks

FAD,

There's several ways to go about this. Yes, there's a lot of points, something like 312,000, so it takes a while to MapImport.

Here's a way to shave a little time off the process. Start with a shape of Sonoma County, drawing attached:

FAD,

And here's how to define the query to use just Sonoma County PM. In the County Field the data you want is "SON". The data is case sensitive.

FAD,

"...when you did the query you not attach the shp file like Jason video did. Do you need to do this?"

Query works on an Attached Drawing, not on a Shapefile.

Hi Pointdump,

I need some time to study this a little bit more but I am sure when I imported the shp file into autocad I did call it sonomashp.dwg and then attached it when starting the query.

Thanks

Yes, just like that. MapImport'ing a Shapefile into a drawing converts the Shapefile into AutoCAD Objects with Data. Save and Close that drawing. Then you can Attach and Query from a second drawing.

Watch Jason's video again. I watched it probably 20 times before I completely understood the process.

Hi Pointdump,

One more problem I have is the fonts are really small which makes it hard to read. I tried zooming into a point and click select all and change the size to 7.0 put this did not work.

Is this because maybe the way the original data was created that I cant change it?

Thanks

OK, your current Text Style shows a size of 7. Are you using that Text Style in a Label or MText? I don't see any text in your drawing.

Oh, and do you really need 1242 Layers? That's a performance killer.

Hi Pointdump,

As you can see I am new to this and yes I do see the text style menu which you are seeing with the information but how do I bring in the pm numbers

like you have so that it is readable.

I don't know if I am using the text style in a label of mtext all I would like to have is just the numbers.

Your right the 1242 layers is a over kill can you show me how to remove this and just keep the pm numbers for Sonoma county.

Thanks

FAD,

Unless you have an established Template that you want to use, you can create a new drawing with no template. The new drawing will open with only the Zero Layer and very limited C3D Styles:

FAD6.png

FAD5.png

To label those PM's (what are those, anyway?) use a Map Annotation Template. With a Map Annotation Template (basically just a block) you can label one, a selected few, or all of your PM Points:
https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad-map-3d/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2016/EN...

In my drawing, in Map Workspace >> Annotate Tab >> Map Annotation Panel, click on Insert and choose "PM":

Here's an old Screencast I did to label Districts in Lithuania:
