Polygonal viewport grip stretching freezes

Hi guys!

I have problem in my Civ3D 2013 and 2014 editions - similar problem persist when trying to stretch polygonal viewoprts or adding extra vertex points using Blue Grips at the end of polygon corners or adding vertexes using middle of polygon vertex line grip.  If file is just freshly opened - it will allow Viewport stretching/editing/adding vertexes using Blue Grips for a while but suddenly will freeze and would not allow any Grips to be moved/stretched anymore.  The last Grip used would turn red and that is it.  You can get out of "frozen" command state by clicking ESC or drawing any object/line but returning to viewport grip editing will not allow untill AutoCAD restarted and file is freshly open again.  In fact any operation or editing or even moving any other objects by the endpoint grips even simple one segment line becoms impossible after the 1-st "freeze". I see people have similar problems but no solution.  Anyone in AutoDesk paying attention? - Please help!  I do a lot of site plans twhere I use Polygonal viewports to cut to exact match line outlines and it is invaluable tool.  Unfortunately with multiple viewport polygons this problem persist and eats up a lot of valuable time due to reloading CAD and DWG  file.  i did not notice this problem before as we did not do complex cut lines - but now we do need it and I am in trouble!

If you have viable solution/workaround - please share.  Reloading AutoCAD and DWG file every 5-10 minutes IS NOT A GOOD SOLUTION!

p/s

My AutoCAD Civ3D 2013 and 2014 is a fresh install on a new Precision M6800 Mobile Workstatin with all the killer parameters.

The same problem was on the old Cad Station - I attributed to a corrupt CAD installation - did not want to reinstall CAD as was expecting new PC, hoping fresh install will fix it. - It did not!

This is a known issue that Autodesk is aware of.

Are you by chance using a Dynamic North Arrow?

Thank you Jay_B

I do use dynamic North Arrow - In fact, I customized it to include some Datum info that must accommodate our North Arrow and it works great!

Dynamic North Arrow, Scale bars and other dynamic is a great asset of Civil 3D. In particular, Dynamic North arrow allows easy manipulation of viewport’s modelspace view rotation angle to a desirable level by simply changing angle of the arrow in the North Arrow Property box (Ctl+1 or drop down Properties menu).  Especially when you work with many tabs in one file and you need to manipulate many views.  In the past, I used DVIEW command and a TWIST to get viewport view to a desirable angle/level and it was a cumbersome process.  Dynamic NA is a big help in getting map view to a desirable angle in your viewport.

After reading topic from your link - I did my testing - indeed dynamic North Arrow causes the problem!

I did my own testing - delete or explode your dynamic arrow - this will disassociate your viewport dynamic link to it.  Now you can reshape your Polygonal Viewport to any shape and it will never "freeze" your process.

On the other note - I inserted and associated a dynamic Scale Bar with my Polygonal Viewport.  Now no dynamic North Arrow connected to a viewport, but Dynamic scale bar is associated with it.  Editing/stretching by the grips viewport polygon will freeze again at some point in the middle of the process.

My conclusion: - Autodesk has a bug inside the Dynamic Link Association programming code that causes process of reshaping polygonal viewports using its grips to freeze, rendering file unusable until you reload the file.

My workaround solution:

As soon as you aligned viewport to a desirable angle (level) using North Arrow angle properties - explode your arrow. this will break the dynamic association link with North Arrow Object. Now you can reshape viewport to any shape you need without getting interrupted by "freeze"

After you done with reshaping operation - you can keep exploded NA if no more viewport view rotation/adjustment is expected or just reinsert new Dynamic North Arrow and connect to your viewport for potential angle manipulation in the future.

This is a bug in a Civil 3D that Autodesk need to address.  Despite many "useless upgrades”, I see sometimes in new versions of AutoCAD - this one is actually very helpful - in my workflow anyway... Autodesk - please fix the problem – you paid good money by the professionals around the world for the software, and when a truly good tool comes in as improvement – it should work rock solid!

I agree with you that this is a bug and should be fixed. Having said that, it's important for all users of this forum to log these critical issues with Autodesk Support via Subscription, as they do not read every post in these forums.

The more an issue get's reported, increases the likelihood it may become a priority for consideration to be fixed.

Hi guys, still no solution on the matter of polygonal viewports and dynamic NA and Scales from AutoDesk.. This is sad!..

However i found a link for the solution of slow or sluggish running Civil3D especially on opening, saving and internal commands problem.

This problem started with Civil 3D 2014 and continued through 2017.  If you are experiencing slow AutoCAD Civil3D performance - use this simple fix to speed it up to 95%.  Benchmark of one of my files was 10 minutes to open the file only (complex Civ3d Design).  After the patch installed - it took only 25 seconds to open.  Same goes to all the internal CAD operations/commands - wast speed improvement.

Most people who is new to Civiv3D and started to work with it around 2014 - will think this is the way Civ3d should work - slow and sluggish.  But most older folks as i am was frustrated with it since I noticed this sluggishness around 2015.

It takes really only 5 minutes to replace corrupt file in your CAD Civ3D installation folder and your Workstation Civ3d will be flying again!
