Parcels Auto Closing when Creating from Objects

Forgive me if this has been answered and I missed it...

We received linework from another engineering firm for property lines. Our new quality control check is to make parcels from objects. If the parcel does not close, we know there is a gap. If the parcel segment does not match the line length, we know there is an overshoot.

Is there a variable or setting that auto closes a parcel if it is "close enough"? If so, is there a way to change that tolerance or turn it off? Civil 3D is auto closing parcels which we do not want it to do.

Here is my process with an example picture below:

  1. Create an 80'x80' rectangle.
  2. Offset the top edge 20' three times to make four 80'x20' areas
  3. (Intentionally) shorten the 3 interior lines by 0.0000025'
  4. Create Parcels from Objects

I would expect to have only 1 parcel (80'x80') as there are intentional gaps, but Civil 3d (2023.3.1) is auto closing the parcels:

(Note the bearings on the eastern edge of the northern and southern parcels are different.)

If you zoom in on the linework, you can see the gap.

What is the tolerance on this and can we change it or turn that off? I understand this is minor and within construction tolerance, but out of principle, we need to know where the cutoff is to make sure our calculations are correct. This is only 20' but over a much larger distance, that bearing discrepancy will be even larger. We have approved plans that we need to match the bearing to 0.1 seconds. We have some very concerned surveyors trying to comp. hundreds of lots on this project.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The parcel has to close or its not a parcel.  It is a series of parcel segments.  There isn't a tolerance value in there.

You may consider running the HATCH command, and set HPGAPTOL to a sufficiently low value (0.001).  I'm not sure it is a workflow I would want to trust but it is closest to what you are asking.

I'm not sure if there's a way to do this once they are Parcel objects, but I would suggest using MAPCLEAN command to clean up line work beforehand, especially from outside sources.

Also, Jerry Bartels has a great video on this:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Zj0-TeJRVQ

I think for you specific situation, I'd jump to 11:35 "Extending Undershoots" & at 17:41 "Erase Dangling Objects"

Parcels can only exist as closed objects.

0.0000025' is such a small number (0.0007mm for those in the metric system), not even machinists can produce parts with that small a tolerance, it is basically 0. Try shortening it by a real world figure like 1' and see what happens.
