Why does the sub-base depth parameter target not target the generic links correctly for a sub-base whose depth varies?

 

I am trying to vary the thickness of the sub-base layer in a corridor model where we have raised crossings, i.e. the top three layers (pave1, pave2 and base shapes) maintain the same thickness while the subbase changes.  I have two profiles, 1 finished surface profile which includes raised crossings and 1 design profile for the bottom of the subbase layer as if there were no crossings.  See screenshot #1.  I have tried both a LinkVertical and LinkSlopeAndVertical Deflection followed by LaneSuperelevationAOR and CrownedLane and get the same result/problem.  See screenshort #2.  There I have an assembly prior to setting the parameter target.  Link vertical targets the subbase profile and builds correctly.  The subbase layer in the lane subassembly builds to a depth of 0.42m as specified in the subassembly.  As soon as I set the parameter target in the assembly for the lane subassembly subbase depth to target the LinkVertical.End Elevation, the subassembly’s subbase layer in the assembly disapperars and the model builds the subbase layer to a depth of the 1.16m instead of targeting to the elevation of the LinkVertical assembly which of course targets the subbase profile.  LinkVertical still builds correctly in the model.  See screenshort #3.

 

Does anyone know why this does not work?  Can anyone explain the step I am possibly missing in the setup?  Thank you in advance your advice and input.

Right, doesn't seem to work, but LinkOffsetAndElevation does work.

Hi Fred,

 

Thanks for the tip.  I gave that a try and when I set the Parameter Reference, the LinkOffsetAndElevation targets correctly to the subbase profile but the  subbase elevation for the lane subassembly targets down to an elevation of around z=0.  Any idea what step I am missing?

Because you are using a number with elevation magnitiude for depth, and thats typically a relatively large number. Use a dummy profile with elevations at magnitudes that are on the order of a depth parameter.
