offset feature line

I have a question about offsetting feature line. The program doesn't allow me to offset a specific one. However, if I reverse the FT, the offsetting goes smoothly. Could anyone explain the reason behind? just curious. Thanks!

I've had this similar problem many times, even with simple objects like polylines.  The few times I've been able to figure out why, it's been a double vertice on top of itself, or 2 vertices very close, or it just not quite closing on itself.  Sometimes it will work for me if I change the distance I want to offset, or offset 1' in the wrong direction and then X+1' back to get what I wanted in the first place.  AutoCAD is simply a fickle mistress....
