Naming conventions for alignments and profiles

I am needing to establish naming conventions for alignments and profiles. Right now my focus is on profiles as they are a current issue.

When it comes to profiles, we have 1) design/layout profiles, 2) surface sample profiles, 3) projected profiles and others I may not have thought about. For each of these categories there can be any number of sub-profiles, such as offset left or right, subgrade, etc.

Obviously things can get really messy when you get into curb returns, connected alignments, etc., especially when you have to figure out which ones to target in a corridor.

So with that said, what are folks out there doing to address this?

I get that part. How do you distinguish surface profiles from design profiles, projected, etc.?

Surface profiles get the surface name. Projected? not overly concerned with them

I use a  Dn descriptor for design profiles/alignments and the CA denotes Connected alignment. I also use Ty for temporary objects and Ex for Existing. Fairly simple to be honest

Does anyone know if we can select a target profile by picking an alignment graphically? Say for example you want to pick an edge of pavement profile by picking the edge of pavement alignment in plan view.

Yes, the dialog will list the available profile in said alignment. You can also pick the profile directly from PV

I'm not seeing that Joe. When I want to choose a profile target, I have a graphical picker to choose an alignment, but when I do, the list of profiles still shows all profiles, not just for the alignment I pick. How does it work?
