mms files - extremely poor user experience using Civil today

Someone posted in this forum that mms files are the death sentence for surfaces....and from today's experiences they were absolutely correct and I'm going to have to go through the convoluted process detailed here - "External Surface File Not Found" after deleting the associated Surface in Civil 3D (autodesk.com) -...to try and remove them as deleting the Proxy objects is an instant crash...

Rant over....😁

The recommendation I followed is as below

and the drawing opened up with no issues even though I had to add three copies of a renamed random mms file as suggested - what is the point of an mms file in this situation?

I am having an issue where I tried copying one from somewhere else and it isn't working. Did you have to do 3 .mms files in one folder at a time or try 3 different .mms files one at a time before you found one that worked?

I think the latter - but can't remember if I'm honest.

I always try and reduce the size of a surface by Simplification to avoid mms files if at all possible
