Measuring average width

Is there a way in AutoCAD to calculate the average width between two irregular lines, such as the average width between stream banks?

In the past I've been able to get a reasonable approximation using this method.  Start by calculating the average length of the two lines.  Add two temporary lines at the ends to get a closed area.  That area divided by the average length should give an average width.

Didn't think about that. That should get me close enough.
Thanks.
