Low Usage CPU (CPU USE max 14%)

Hi,

I watch,  that on Civil  2017  we get something like : CORE 2017 what improve this tool?

Unfortunately, still nothing was done with very low CPU usage.. max 15% -  it's unacceptable.

SS make when Corridor rebuilding.

Maybe someone now,  how  increase  CPU usage ?

Grret.

Hi,

AutoCAD itself and AutoCAD verticals are single threaded applications, so they can only use one core of your processor.

In case your processor has 8 cores you can use 100% / 8 cores => 12.5%

Besides of some internal functionality (like rendering, or display actions) which can use multiple cores on the CPU or the GPU you can't raise AutoCAD itself to use more cores parallel.

>> it's unacceptable.

I can understand that it's sometimes frustrating when you are waiting for a result and you see that the processor has 80% free power available. But on the other hand not all can be done using parallel threads. Think about sending a letter for a distance of 100km, it does not make sense to use 2 cars and each goes for 50km, same for geometric calculations or input, running command _UNION to combine 3 spheres can't be splitted into 2 or more threads, because the result of one calculation is the start for the other one. It's hard, I do understand you, but it's also hard for the other side/the software.

I can't agree with your opinion.
For example, competitive software ( mean Bentley) using 100% of all  cores - ofcourse Inroad is faster than  Civil...
I think, that source code is poorly written - can't be so that we have a 10 core processors and the software will use 1.
I must uphold my opinion -  it's unacceptable for me,  taht nothing was make to increase usage of CPu.

Yeap no sense, but when 1 car go faster 8x we get a nice resoults..

Hi,

Create 100 spheres, in a distance smaller than the radius and then unify all together 😉

That is not how processors can work, Hyperthreading can help to get 2 cores together (with limitations), but you can't build the sum of 2 byte values (3+4) faster by using 2 cores.

And maybe that's the point , I have 1 spheres instead 100 🙂

I'm not a computer scientist or an expert on the principle of operation of processors, so I 'm not going to discuss with u.

But i  hope in  future Autodesk imporve Civil  to use more core's.

The biggest drawback is that it is a single thread application - frustrating when it takes 30minutes to recalculate a grading and only 1 out of 12 cores is working. But, I think you'll find that the single core is being maxed out for something like a big grading/surface calc.

Press Ctrl-Alt-Del, go to task manager, then go the performance tab. Then click on the resource monitor button and you'll get some better views on the use of your system resources like CPU cores. It'll tell you what programs are using which cores, etc.

Cheers

Yeap, it's  frustrating.. when i must wait 20 min. to rebuild Corridor.

Meybe it's time to think about new core code to Civil...

Yes totally ridiculous, auto desk products only using one core

£220 min a month per seat for AutoCAD  with probably a million users. an new update each year for a program and  a program that hasn’t changed much since Auto 2000 or earlier. How can it still be running on one core it’s unfathomable. They have had the money to rewright this program from the ground up several times over. Really it is extortion. That’s probably why it’s now on subscription. People probably buying the ropey updates.
