Longitudinal profile from 3D polyline

Hello everybody,

 

I have a 3d Polyline which is the road axis and a surface created from contours.

Is it possible in 3D Civil to get a longitudinal section from a 3D Polyline?

I need to find out the different high between the surface and the axis every 10m,  in the longitudinal section of  the road axis.

Create an Alignment on the center of the road, then create a profile & profile view using the alignment and your surface.

Then select your profile view and look for "Project Objects To Profile View" on the ribbon.  You can select your 3d polyline and it will add it to the profile view.

The default tools (alignment, profile) all require 2D geometry. The 3dpoly cannot be used to drive either tool.

You'll need an alignment. If the alignment needs to come from the 3d poly, copy it in place (zero displacement) and then explode. Those entities should now be 2D. You'll then need a surface. You could offset the original 3dpoly a small distance left and right and create a surface from all 3 objects. Then create a surface profile from that surface.

Dear Friend,

I would suggest this procedure.

Go to feature lines and create a feature line from your 3D polyline. (But do not erase the 3D polyline while creating Feature line.)

Then convert your 3D polyline to a 2D polyline and convert it to an alignment.

Create the surface profile for the alignment and create profile view.

Project the feature line to profile view.

Then from the profile view bands you can compare the elevations. 

And from report manager you can get a report of the level difference.

Thank you for your answer,

 

The first point worked but I could not project the polyline in the profile view. The polyline is a 3D Polyline and when I do a 2D polyline the high it is uniform (layer).

Thank you for your answer Kevin.Spear,

 

I have tried to what you suggest but unfortunately, when I did explode the 3Dpolyline I got every meter a line (the Polyline had 10km). Then I could not do a 2D Polyline. What I did it is to convert directly in 3D Civil 3D Polyline to 2D Polyline.

create a quick profile form 3D poly.

LANDXMLOUT

uncheck everything

pick from drawing and select 3D poly profile (from quick profile).

Save land XML and re imported. You will have an alignment and profile from 3D poly

Hi @Anonymous / Cristina,

 

I agree with @Dexterel, better way is convert 3d poly or 3d featureline to quick profile and export to XML and re-import as alignment and profile together. Just to add more information you can visit this <thread link> and check message 3 as I have placed an animated gif there to show how to do this step by step. Once you created your profile you can add surface to your profile then select your profile and edit profile view style and change the profile interval to 10m as you need.

It has been really helpful your procedure.

 

That it is what I have done:

Convert the 3D polyline to a 2D polyline. Then convert 2D polyline to an alignment.

When I tried to project the feature line in the Profile view it didn’t work  

Instead I have created a Quick Profile (right click 3D polyline). From that quick profile I have exported LandXML. I got a file called for example ‘ Alignment.xml’ . Then I have imported that file ‘.xml’ again in my project. (It is import with the same coordinates)

Now I have a profile view with the projection of my surface and the Alignment (previous 3D polyline)

How can I get the report of the level difference (with report manager)?

The easiest way I found to convert 3D poylines to 2D polylines is to use the CONVERT3DPOLYS command. It's found on the Modify ribbon in the expanded portion of the Design panel as shown here:
