Layout Viewports

I prepare a drawing in Model space (a subdivision with lots) and when I go to Paper space the drawing is already there but unreadable due to scaling problems. 

A) I don't understand why the Model space drawing exists in Paper space when I have created a Viewport and

B) I can't figure out how to manipulate the scale in the Viewport to make the drawing readable.

Paper Space of course represents the paper you'll be plotting. When you create a Viewport it's like cutting a hole in the paper that you can see your Model Space through. The scale that the Model Space shows at in the Viewport is a property of that Viewport. I'm sure the links that @Wojtek_Garczewski will explain how to set the scale and orient the Viewport.

Thank you for the response. Here’ what’s going on:


1. I create a single-family subdivision using Parcels at a Model scale of 1” = 40”
2. I click on the Layout tab and the subdivision shows up (that in itself I don’t understand) that I have done nothing to create
3. I click on the triangle and change the Paper scale to 1” = 10’ for the 1:4 ratio described in “About Scaling Views in Layout Viewports” and the drawing explodes to a size that nothing is readable.

So, where am I going wrong?

What do you mean by creating it at 1"=40'?  Are you talking about the Annotation Scale? Because Model Space is always 1:1

That's controlled by a setting in Options. If that's checked. When you create a layout there will be Viewport created. Also there will be Viewports in the default layouts.

I haven't read the “About Scaling Views in Layout Viewports”. But if you had 1"=40' in Model Space. Wouldn't you want to plot at that scale. I'm not saying you couldn't plot at a different scale. But it's more likely to be at the Annotation Scale.

If possible. Post your drawing. That way we can see what's happening.

What do you mean by creating it at 1"=40'? Are you talking about the Annotation Scale? Because Model Space is always 1:1



I mean that the scale on the Status Bar is set to 1” = 40’. I have noticed that scale doesn’t change when I zoom so presumably that’s because the drawing is always 1:1. I didn’t know that. That’s good to know but It doesn’t help really with the immediate problem.



Question – What does the 1” = 40’ on the Status Bar mean?

I haven't read the “About Scaling Views in Layout Viewports”. But if you had 1"=40' in Model Space. Wouldn't you want to plot at that scale. I'm not saying you couldn't plot at a different scale. But it's more likely to be at the Annotation Scale.



Yes, I set the scale at 1” = 40’ because I intend to plot at the 40’ scale. I’m only interested in creating and plotting drawings. At the moment I’m unable to do that.

The viewport is created automatically from the model.
