Layout Reference

This may be a question suited for Autocad in general but since we use Civil 3D I will toss it up here.

We are required to submit plans to our local municipalities via a 24" x 36" sheets. Yet our plans will be incorporated into a set that is 30" x 42". Our goal is to be able to reference said 24" x 36" sheet into the larger size. And we use paper space for our sheets.

Is there a way to create a viewport that references said smaller sheet. And I do realize we can copy and paste but we want to only have to make changes on the smaller sheet and not risking the chance of forgetting to copy and paste into the larger sheet.

Thank you again for speaking to me.

After learning more about your setup, I think the approach of inserting your 30 x 42 title block into your 24 x 36 layout would be the easiest way.

You can then control the larger title block with a new layer, as well as create a view and page setup to allow the larger plotting area.

If you don't already know about the use of Fields in AutoCAD, now might be the time to learn it.

You can create the two titleblocks, but use Fields instead of text or attributes. Actually, you can still use Attributes, but they need to reference Fields.

Create Drawing Properties for your fields. Now, when you want to make a change to some value that needs to be re-populated through multiple sheets, just modify the specific drawing property. You won't need to create Drawing Properties for many of the drawing and system values. If you need a plot date or a drawing name, for example, those properties will be available as you are creating the Field. Something like DrawnBy, however, would need to be a custom Drawing Property.

After you master that, start looking into Sheet Set Manager. 😉

Best regards,

Tim
