Just a few things

Civil Design looks to be a great product if it ever stops crashing... But here are a few things i have seen or would like to see...

1. User Should be able to define the beginning station of an alignment at the create alignment command and have various formats as in 10+00 or 1+00.. i know u can change later but why not make it easy and set it up to work right the first time... we have never used 0+00 as our starting and probably never will even when i did hand dratting.. leaves no room to back station..

2. Program crashes no matter what drawing or command u are in

3. When are they going to add pipeworks and it would be nice to add a feature that would copy a polyline (i.e. water main/sewer main in profile) that would copy it from selected alingment and surface a user defined depth and also add style data as with the rest of the program.

4. You have to create sperate styles in order to have just description turned on versus point number, elev. & desc. turned on.. is there anyway to incorporate the old Edit points option for turning off the various attribute

5. Project setup and drawing attach is very cumbersome(sp) would there be a way to incorporate some project setup dialog at the front that does all this for you and leave the attach drawings to the more experienced users

6. no way to edit the various objects using the pull downs only looks like using a right click.. i know i know but i have various user that still use pulldowns and type commands in..

7. I would love it if they added to the profile label feature for elevations for both (i.e. left and right)
i like how they incorporated the profile name in that option we have been doing this for years by copying text...

8. can u or does it still use the asterik and add profile and surface names to the layers?

9. does attaching alignments to eop's and boc's work the same or is all this going to be centerline alignment and templeate based for transitions

10. Cul-De-Sac and Intersection design would be a MAJOR PLUS!!!!!

That seems to be it for now after just a few hours of looking over from thurs 10-9-03 and 10-10-03.

if i have anymore comments or problems i will be sure to come back

Hi Roger,

To address issue #1,

I am assuming you are using the define from
polyline option.  The fact that you cannot assign the start station value
when defining from a polyline is a known issue, see the readme item entitled,
"Assigning a Starting Station to Alignments Defined from Polylines".  To
resolve the issue, you can edit the start station value in the alignment
properties dialog, station control tab.

When you create an alignment using Create By
Layout, you will find the option to define the start station value in the create
dialog.

Hope that helps

Hi Roger,

To address a couple of your other
comments,

"2. Program crashes no matter what drawing or command u are in "
can you provide more detail on this issue?

"6. no way to edit the various objects using the pull downs only looks like
using a right click.. i know i know but i have various user that still use
pulldowns and type commands in.."   Points,
parcels, alignments, profiles and cross section have an edit command in their
respective pulldown menus.

"8. can u or does it still use the asterik and add profile and surface
names to the layers? "  Yes you can have the
Alignment/Profile/Surface name prefixed or suffixed to the layer you choose for
it to be on.  See section in help entitled, "Object Layer Dialog
Box"

"9. does
attaching alignments to eop's and boc's work the same or is all this going to be
centerline alignment and templeate based for transitions"
size=2>This version of Civil 3D does not contain road modeling
functionality.

Thanks Karen for all your info.. and yea i have found a few other things since i posted... Can u tell Why my ortho doesn't work when starting an alignment... i have to draw the first alignment using the old @ and < way...

Just seems that the program has either carshed or locked up in every tutorial file i have but does seem to run better with windows 2000 prof.. and at this time is not to bothersome and i have started sending reports when it does crash....

glad i am getting a chance to evaluate it and it looks as if when all together this could be a heck of a piece of software and something i have been wanting for years...

thanks for your help

Roger,

You're welcome.  I responded to the ortho
issue in the post in "Please list benefits" thread.

What operating system were you running it on when
it was crashing?  Do send the crash reports.  If you have some
idea on what steps might have led up to the incident, please do post the
information and we can take a look at it.

Karen,

I too have had a number of crashes in just a couple
of hours of use.  They were bad enough that the Autodesk report generator
didn't show up just the microsoft version.

I am running XP.
