Is the problem: my computer, my internet connection, or my company VPN connection??

I recently started a new job working from home.  I am running C3D2022.  My computer is so slow (it is painful).  I also have to connect to my company's VPN through my home WiFi internet.  I am trying to trouble shoot the speed issue.  My first question is: is this computer good to run AutoCAD C3D?

Processor Intel(R) Xeon(R) W-2225 CPU @ 4.10GHz 4.10 GHz
Installed RAM 16.0 GB (15.7 GB usable)
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

I understand running through the VPN slows things down too, but I was not expecting it be THIS slow.

I have cable internet, which is the most reliable around here.

Computer specs impact the application and the files/data its opening. Those specs are a bit below average. I would make it have 32 GB of RAM at a minimum for C3D tasks. WHen your machine runs out of RAM it uses the local hard drive. If your HD is low on space or not an SSD type drive, that could also impact performance.

Running C3D over a VPN is more limited by the VPN connection than your internet connection; not in a bandwidth aspect because VPN adds latency. So the path your digital connection to the office takes is the biggest impact of a VPN. The only way to change the VPN issue is to not use it. This would require you to either use Remote Desktop app over VPN to connect to a machine that's IN the office already OR use a cloud data source (onedrive, box, AUtodesk Docs, etc).

You don't mention the "speed" of your home internet connection. If it's not the highest offered by the cable company, you can call them so you can test the different speeds offered. If you up the speed and see no difference, then the connection is not the issue. Using fast.com or speedtest.net will give you ideas of how well the internet connection is performing.

Thanks
Kevin

My first suggestion would be to hardwire to your router instead of WiFi and see if that helps. It made a big difference when I worked from home. Annoyed my wife since I had the cable taped to the wall running down the hall. But it really helped.

Our VPN connection is dire so all my projects are done via a Sharepoint site synced to my local drive and I run a batch file that uses robocopy to copy back to the server via the VPN at the end of the day - so much quicker and less frustrating.

Can you pull things off of the VPN to your local disc (C:)?

Our VPN is absurdly slow to the point where files with lots of references (especially large surfaces) will take 20+ minutes just to open and/or save.

I have resorted to pulling things onto my C: and then re-uploading once I'm finished with the file. These same files open in less than a minute (often just a couple seconds) when avoiding the VPN.

This is essentially what I'm doing  - plus I get the benefit of versioning in SharePoint ready for the inevitable Civil 3D crash...😉
