Incremental Text

Hi all,

I am wotking on a topographic survey where I have to label every tree on the property and then create a corresponding table with the tree type and size. Is there a way to MTEXT with incrementing numbers? So I can just start at number "1" and then just click and it add "2", "3", etc. Otherwise I will have to do a MTEXT command for every single tree. Any Ideas?

Thanks.

Are the trees currently represented by Cogo Points?

If not, what format do you have the data in?

Yes they are Cogo points.

Josh,

No way I can think of except for the COGO Point Number incrementing. But I learn something new here everyday, so maybe someone will chime in with something clever.

I'm not trying to avoid your original question, but why not just label the cogo points with their point number?

If the answer is the point numbers are like 3650, 3651, 3652, etc. and you want to label the trees 1,2,3, etc., then can you just renumber the cogo points?

I don't believe there is anything in C3D to do what you want with MTEXT. There are lisp files out there that can do it, but I was just thinking of another way of doing it using the tools you have.

that would work but we were doing a topographic survey while we were
locating the trees. So number 58-65 may be trees, but then we have maybe 10
points that are surface shots or a bank or ditch. So the numbers are all
over the place. If that makes sense. It would just be very difficult in the
field to keep the tree shots in order.

Create a point group of just trees.  Add the identification number to each tree as a point name.  Create a new label style that displays the name instead of the point number.  You could also use a user defined property if that works better for your purposes.

Steve,
I think that may be the simplest thing to do. Some we do may only have a
few trees so its no big deal, but many of them have hundreds of trees.
Thanks for your help.

Assuming the information is already coded in the raw description the best way to do this is with description keys and a point label style.

For Example your raw description might be

OAK 36

Your Description Key Code would be:

OAK*

the Point Format for that would be

$1" Oak

Which would report a description of 36" Oak in the point label style.

See Below. Although I'm not showing Trees, the principles and the use of $0 , $1, $2 etc....... are shown.

Express tools has an AutoNumber function. You have to create some of the text first. The text has to be single line text (DText) rather than MText. The routine will put numbers in front of the text based on the pattern you input. Then you could join all the DText to MText.

The other methods mentioned will probably turn out better for you.
