How to display connecting pipes (laterals) and structures in main line profile

Hello,

I have been learning/using C3D for a couple months now.  I have lots to learn.  Learning more and more each day. 

Curious, if you have a profile of a pipe (let's call it storm drain main line SD-1) that has manholes at the ends of it and lateral wye connections along its length, how do you display the joining pipes (as ellipses) in the main line profile along the pipe's length and at the manholes (if the other lines are connecting to the MH)? 

I have watched videos online and they don't explain it well enough.  They make it sound easy.  But, when I select a connecting line and choose to have it drawn in the SD-1 profile, it is not represented as an ellipse.  Usually, I just get a vertical line or the pipe drawn at an angle.  What am I missing?

If the lateral pipes are:

1) civil 3d pipe objects

2) ends are actually snapped onto the center alignment of the main pipe run,

then you can set a override style for the crossing that looks like an ellipse:

However, if the laterals are just vanilla CAD polylines, or if they don't actually touch or intersect with the center alignment of the main pipe run, the you could insert blocks at the intersection points, and project them onto the profile view, and have a project style set up to look like an ellipse crossing:

When you snap the lateral pipe to the center of the main line pipe, a null structure should automatically be inserted at the junction. Draw this null structure into the profile view, and if the structure style is set to "show connected pipes" an ellipse will automatically appear as well. If the ellipse is not centered, you can edit the structure to make it so.
