How to create pond water line at 500 m3 intervals

Hi, I've been asked to find the water line around a design pond at 500 m3 intervals. That is to say, if 500 m3 of water were poured into the pond, where would it come up to, and at 500 m3 intervals up to 4500 m3.

 

I have the pond surface done. There is a ditch that comes in on one side, so the water line won't just be the shape of the pond, it will travel up the ditch a little.

 

Is there a simple way to calculate the water lines?

 

I know I can just create a flat plain covering the whole site, and move it up and down, checking the fill volume, until I get 500 m3. Then use the point it intersects my design pond as the water line.

 

My apologies if this is simple, I don't use Civil much these days.

I using Civil 3D 2015.

In Civil 3D 2015, to determine what elevation these volumes would be at then I would agree with you in making a 'water' surface and raising and lowering it while using a volume surface to compare the water surface and the proposed surface. (Note, I would not make it the size of the whole site but do make sure that it includes the full limits of your basin area, you don't want to inadvertently count another low spot.)

 

Once you know the elevations you can go to your Proposed Surface and on the Analysis tab select User-defined contours from the dropdown menu and set the 'range' to the number of elevations you will want to display and hit the down arrow, you can then set a user-defined contour at east of these elevations. You will want to make sure that your surface style has User Contours turned on. (Note, if your surface includes these contour elevations somewhere else you may want to extract the user contours from the surface, delete the ones that aren't in the area of concern and then turn them back off in your style)

I wouldn't have thought to use User-Defined Contours for the water lines.

You can use the third party app QuickVolumes to get the elevations that produce storage increments of 500m3. The app is available in the Autodesk App Store https://apps.autodesk.com/CIV3D/en/Detail/Index?id=3870259259361639432&appLang=en&os=Win64

Once you have a flat water "surface" that results in 500 m3 volume, you can use the MinmumDistanceBetweenSurfaces command (Ribbon: Analyze >> Ground Data >> Minimize ...) to generate a 3D polyline that that represents the water surface.

 

Create a new "surface"* and adjust elevation until you reach 1000 m3 volume, then repeat MinmumDistancBetweenSurfaces to get a second 3D polyline

 

Repeat at 500 m3 intervals.

 

* you can work with just one surface and adjust the elevation. If there is any chance that the ground surface may be changed, I prefer to use multiple flat surfaces for easy adjustment and checking.  

 

The 3D polylines are not dynamic. The elevations you determine are the same ones you would need for user contours as recommended by @KMercier_C3D. The user contours are dynamic to the surface, but if either of the surfaces change, the volumes would also change and the user contours adjusted and.

The stage storage analysis tool will give you a table showing the capacity of the pond at 1 m intervals. It also gives the cumulative volume so you would just take the cumulative vol at 500 m.

PS,

 

The stage storage analysis tool uses contours that you extract from the terrain model. The contour interval dictates the storage depth increments. If you want storage volumes in 10 m depth increments, extract 10 m contours etc. You will get more precise volumes if you use smaller increments.
