How do I remove architectural MEP modules from drawing?

So apparently I was ignorant of how horrendously slow a C3D dwg becomes when an architect's block is inserted.  I've probably lost at least an hour a day for the last 2 weeks before being informed that it is most likely due to the MEP items bogging things down.  I looked at the command line history once the dwg had fully opened and sure enough, there are 3 or 4 MEP base modules shown as having loaded.

I'm told the only way to remedy the situation is to cut and paste or re-reference into a new blank drawing.  Is this true?  Before I start down this road, I'd like to know if there's a way to just purge these items out somehow.

Thanks!

Have you tried purging Regapps?

Searching in C3D Help for "Regapps", I was first led to an Autodesk app that cleans dwg files. Well that didn't seem to work - I still saw the 4 MEP items loading when opening subject dwg file. Then I discovered the -purge command which I believe is what you were referring to. I'd always just gone through the "purge" dialogue which doesn't include the regapp category Anyway, after messing with that a few times, it occurred to me I hadn't exploded all client-rooted blocks from dwg. It was well beyond quitting time when I'd gotten the blocks blown up and purged. I had just started into Design Center when I had to leave (was running extremely slow for only 34 blocks in the dwg). I'll pick back up tomorrow and report back.

After a back and forth of exploding blocks and purging various types of items, I think I'm good.  I believe it was a combination of using the -purge command with R for Regapps, and using this tool:

Says 2015 but I read it also works fine with 2016.  It seemed that I had to get rid of ALL foreign blocks, layers, and linetypes before I stopped seeing the MEP items loading.  What's weird is that I saw them loading when opening C3D a few times, though I think it has stopped.
