Help with Longsections - Profiles, Alignments & Featurelines

Hello! First time posting here.

I am designing a walking track in C3D and I want to create a long section along the walking track that shows the natural surface and the design surface at the centreline of the track. I want this long section to update dynamically such that if I move the location of the walking track in plan, then the shape of the natural surface along that path will update automatically, and hence I can see how I need to modify the design to suit.

To do this, I have tried using an alignment to be able to have station labels shown along the alignment, and then created a feature line from the alignment to be able to edit the elevations along that feature line and hence grade the walking track appropriately.

When it comes to displaying this in a long section, I have achieved this using a Quick Profile from the feature line as follows:

 Quick Profile Creation.PNGProfile View.PNG

This achieves what I want, however, being a Quick Profile, I can't save without losing it. I can explode it, but if I do that, then I lose it's dynamic behavior.

So what I would like to do, is create a profile view of the alignment to show the existing surface along the alignment, and then add the feature line onto the profile view of the alignment so I can show the design.

My issue is, when I try to add the feature line to the profile view of the alignment, I can only find how to project it onto the profile view of the alignment. This means it only comes up as a Projection in the Profile View Properties and doesn't come up in the list of Profiles in the Profile View Properties. This is an issue because I can not change the Bands to use the feature line profile for the design levels since there is only one Profile listed in the Profile View Properties. Below is what I have in the Profile View Properties vs what I would like to have:

HAVE:

WANT:

Profile View Properties.PNG

Note the 3d Entity Profile is the feature line profile that I am trying to add the non-Quick Profile.

I am a very novice user of C3D, so if there is a better way to plot a long section along a path and be able to edit design levels and show compared to existing ground as per my Quick Profile image above, please let me know.

Cheers,

Tom.

Hi Thomas,

Draw out your alignment horizontally. Then click on it, at the top, click surface profile. Add your existing surface, scroll through the settings and pick your scale, click on the screen somewhere. Now, click on the longsection you have created, at the top click profile creation tools. This is the tool for vertical alignment, now you can create your proposed levels along the existing. If you move the horizontal alignment on plan, you will need to go back to the longsection and update vertical to suit,

You can also set the station and elevations of the profile view to Automatic.  That way the view will adjust itself to suit whatever needs to be displayed.
