GIS Shapefiles conversion to feet in civil 3d

Hi guys,

 

I've imported a GIS shapefile to civil 3d and did the conversion to a TIN surface. I notice that the contour labels are in meters! How would I change that into feet? My thinking is the shapefile needs to be converted into feet in GIS software before importing into civil 3d?

Might want to check your North/East coordinates too.But yea, a lot of GIS data is metric.

Please post your shapefile and/or your drawing. My first thought would be to check your Contour Label Style.

1. If the shp file has been assigned a coordinate system, that will display in the Input Coordinate System column during Map Import. Lets assume that is a meter-based system. Assign a foot-based system to your drawing, through Edit Drawing Settings. This will convert the metric to feet and you won't need to apply any conversion factor. 

 

2. If the incoming shp does not have a coordinate system defined: Assign a foot-based system to your drawing. During MapImport, click on the ellipsis next to where it says "none" in the Input Coordinate System column. This will allow you to pick a coordinate system. Pick the metric equivalent of the foot-based system you assigned to the drawing. You won't know if the coordinates are geolocated, but coordinates and elevations will be converted from meters to feet.

 

Option for #2, call the person who sent the file and ask what coordinate system should be assigned. That will ensure that you are geolocated.
