Geolocation Maps not working in Civil 3D 2015

Anonymous
Not applicable

I know this has been asked before on these forums, but I have yet to find a solution that resolves my Civil 3D 2015 issue.

A couple of days ago, the Geolocation Tab disappeared from my Ribbon.  I had to rework my CUI to get the tab to show up again, and now none of the buttons on that tab work.  When I select Map Aerial, the ARC command activates.  Map Road activates the REDRAW command, and Map Hybrid begins the HATCH command.  I have applied all of the Service Packs and the Hotfix, and nothing has worked.  I am logged in to AutoDesk 360.  If I didn't have deadlines to meet, this would be comical; instead, this has become a huge headache.  I MUST have this feature working due to client requirements and my company's lack of other aerial photography throughout the country (which is not feasible to get on short-fuse projects).  How do I fix this?

In the meantime, if you type in the command GEOMAP - does that work?

No, it does not. It says that GEOMAP is an unknown command.

I agree, but I'm not the one in my company who can make that decision. I need a practical solution.

K99,

Whenever I get the arc or hatch command it means I haven't assigned a Projected Coordinate System to my drawing. So if you have assigned a Geographic Coordinate System (Lats & Longs) or you have No Projection No Datum assigned, that is the reason.

What Coordinate System is your drawing in? Some of the Canadian CSRS Coordinate Systems and even some UTM's are troublesome.

Dave,

I'm working in Oklahoma North SPCS. When I don't have a coordinate system assigned, the Geolocation tab isn't even present on the ribbon. It is only when I have one assigned that I see the tab.

I had an issue like this once, but I was missing buttons on the tab. It wound up being a bad user profile in the registry, but I don't know how to fix it. A tech walked me through the process of rebuilding my registry, but I don't remember the steps and I am not knowledgeable enough to dig through my registry files and know what file is what. If you or anyone else has ideas on how to resolve that issue, I am more than happy to listen.

Just as an FYI, I ran a repair on my installation, but nothing changed. I also did a full uninstall/reinstall, but again, nothing changed. Short of wiping my hard drive and starting from scratch, I am out of ideas.

Jason,

The only other thing I can think of is to make sure you've got something in your drawing, linework, shapefile, COGO points, anything, before you hit the gas on Live Maps.

Dave,

I'm working with alignments and survey data. I'll get in touch with my reseller (if my company has one, I've only worked here for two weeks and am encountering this problem) and see if their tech support can help. I do appreciate your suggestions.

I am going to air a complaint about Autodesk (not directed at you as a personal attack, just a general grievance about Autodesk). I really find it frustrating that the developer offers no tech support beyond these forum threads. Autodesk makes users rely on support through other companies or in-house IT departments. Not every company has in-house IT, and in my case I'm hoping I can get in touch with whoever sold us the software and cross my fingers they know how to fix my problem. It's a huge Autodesk shortcoming and one I wish they would change. I am slowly losing functionality with my software (I can't edit cogo points or alignment labels) and am guessing the problem is a corrupt user profile buried somewhere in my registry. Like I said in an earlier post, I have encountered this problem before at a previous company that used C3D 2016, but didn't write down the steps I was guided through to fix my profile. Very exasperating.

Thank you again for your ideas; unfortunately, they didn't help this particular situation.

I have. I was getting error messages that .NET 4.5 wasn't installed and when I checked the version (using some on-line instructions) I found that it was 4.6.01055. I had to change it to 4.5 to install the service packs. The whole process most likely screwed up other files, but I don't know where or how. I'm not a PC IT guy and don't know my way around well enough to mess with system files without instructions. Probably shouldn't have installed the SPs; the program was working fine before. Now it won't even save files. I think I'll start using MicroStation after this experience; at least I know it works.

Are you can reinstall the program? maybe works!
I understand your frustration about that, but i think the support a old program this very difficult, we dont have many options, the Windows changes and have many updates about some things in the operation system.

I have reinstalled and it yielded no change. And I completely understand what you're saying, but the program is only a few years old, machine I'm working on has Windows 7 and what I don't understand is how Civil 3D can just lose functionality overnight. This seems like a soapbox rant, but the MicroStation v8i I'm running was released in 2012 and I have yet to find issue with it. That being said, not everyone uses that software so I have to rely on Autodesk products for the majority of my production. It's difficult to be productive when one is fighting technical issues like this. And when I can't get in touch with tech support through a simple phone call, it's doubly aggravating.

Okay, I have the ArcGeoLocationUI.arx file but have no idea which folder is the right one to copy to. I've done this a few times now, but I'm likely placing it in the wrong folder.

Autodesk® Autocad® 2015 Geolocation Online Map Hotfix

As you may have noticed the Geolocation online map provided by Bing® stopped downloading on October 29th, 2014, when Bing changed its server-side connection protocol. Autodesk released a hotfix for this issue which can be downloaded from this link.

Instructions for installation from readme:

You must have administrative privileges on your Microsoft® Windows® operating system to complete the installation process.

This installation process requires you to modify an installed product, which may cause Windows security warnings to appear. For all Windows security warnings that appear during installation, click Continue.

We recommend that you update your Autodesk applications with the latest service packs or updates.

  1. Close all software applications.
  2. Navigate to the folder where your Autodesk product is installed.

For AutoCAD 2015: C:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2015

  1. Right-click AcGeoLocationUI.arx and click Properties.
  2. Click the Display tab and verify the file version.
  3. Right-click AcGeoLocationUI.arx. Rename it as AcGeoLocationUI.bak,
  4. Download the Hotfix to a location on your local computer.
  5. Extract the downloaded zip file.
  6. Copy the extracted file (AcGeoLocationUI.arx) from step 7 (from the x86 or x64 sub-folder) depending on whether you have 32-bit or 64-bit software) to your product installation folder i.e. to the folder specified in step 2.
  7. Repeat steps 3 and 4 and verify that the file version of AcGeoLocationUI.arx is 20.0.210.3 or greater.
    1. If the version number of AcGeoLocationUI.arx is 20.0.51.0 then, proceed with installation.
    2. If the version number of AcGeoLocationUI.arx is 20.0.210.3 or greater, this hotfix has already been applied and you do not need to proceed with the installation.

Success. Thank you very much. I tried both the x64 and x86 files. The x64 worked. I appreciate your help.
