Formatting text from Excel

Hi I am resending a post but with an CAD file for better understanding:

I am importing some Excel tables and even that the source file (in excel) is set up with the same Font (simplex), the output table in Civil3D looks different. Both text -the one generated by the table and the one generated by Multitext- have also the same Style in my CAD file.

If I try to change the output for a big range of cells in Civil3D to make a match, the only possibility that I have is to change the Style. To Change the Font is only possible one by one, and in a big data set is time consuming.

How is possible to change the Font for a big range of cells in a table linked with Excel? Actually how is possible to change the Font of several Multitext at the same time?

Just for your info: If I go to the Style and change the Font is not helping, remember both texts have the same Style and Font.

Just in case it helps, I am sending a .dwg file so you can see the difference in between the text generated by the table and the text generated by Multitext option in Civil3D.

Regards

When I open the dwg, all the text looks the same to me.

Hi Mary, first of all thanks for your response... I was feeling that I was sailing totally alone in this site.

I did a zoom in your .png and again the difference is really slight but it is still different. Check the decimal point and you can see that one generated by Excel is a complete square and the one generated by AutoCAD is an incomplete square. Plus the Excel text is a bit bolder.

Please let me know what you think

I know what you mean, I am eagerly awaiting an answer to my question.

Yes, I noticed those slight differences, I just assumed maybe that was due to the two texts coming from 2 different sources. Sorry I wasn't much help.

I'm guessing you are using paste special from excel to table?

try defining the data link in the data link manager. then add a blank table to the drawing.

enter the top left cell, right click add data link

Hi Joe:

Thank you very much for your help. It is not the first time that I have a response from you.

I am bringing the table with Data Link not with Paste Special. I am sending now my Excel file just in case you can do the process... if you have time.

Hi Joe I do have a hint that may solve the problem:

I select any Cell individually, and after that select the text then I change the Font from Simplex to something else and then back to Simplex problem solved. The problem is for large dataset is very consuming...

Hi Ralph

I'm having issues with paste special in 2018 but in 2017 I see the issue with the the closed square. I have no explanation. Try highlighting the data cells with a crossing window, right click >> cell style >> data (it probably say by row column before the change) it didn't change the closed square here maybe on your end ???

Hi Joseph:

We were in contact a couple of weeks ago trying to solve a problem in regards of fonts of CAD tables imported from Excel. I was asking something else in this forum but I feel that I found the solution just in case you are interested.

Please have a check to this link

The reason you have a difference in your text is because there are 2 fonts, 1 is simplex.ttf and the other is simplex.shx.

ACad/C3D can use both fonts, Excel can only use the ttf. Unlock a cell, go to edit it and look at the symbol next to the font name. The font problem is an Excel issue, not an ACad/C3D issue. Once, long ago you could have Excel remove all formatting from cells and datalinks would not bring in any formatting from excel, but it doesn't seem to work that way anymore. I have learned to live with simplex.ttf for datalinks, once printed it looks the same as simplex.shx.

If you know the font you wish to use, then change to that font while still in the spreadsheet. Once your font is applied to the spreadsheet cells, then perform your Copy & Paste.

BTW, stubborn font is not the only issue when copying from an Excel file and pasting to Acad. As you already know, some edits can only be done on a cell-by-cell basis. It appears Microsoft gives precedence to the Excel font which in turn highjacks Autocad’s text styles.

The only work around I know is to use Table Styles in combination with Row Styles. You gotta invest some time to set up the styles and when you’re finally done, it still requires some clicking and editing, on a table by table basis. If you go this route be prepared to bring your game fingers cause that’s what you’ll be doing—lots and lots of repetitve clicking.
