If you work on commercial, industrial, multifamily, etc. I want to hear your thoughts on surface smoothing. Do you use it? Why or why not? If you do, what do you think of it? Are there any common problems you run into?

Looking forward to hearing from you!

I don't work on any of these projects but do not use surface smoothing as I prefer to add additional breaklines/points etc to create a representative surface. Contour lines are only as good as the underlying DTM and the defined spacing and if smoothed and used by a third party to rebuild a DTM could give erroneous results.
