Fill Gaps in Section View & Datum not following subassembly link codes

The datum won't build along the links coded "datum" along the shoulder sub-assembly I created.  Since I'm also using the shapes for quantities, these small voids in the fill shape will result in an incorrect quantity.  The datum extends to the outermost limit of the cut and then goes vertical where it intersects with the topsoil shape.

I'm a rookie at sub composer, but this one works as expected, except for this one issue.  Still working through what all of the codes do.

Is this a code in the sub, or maybe something in the "surface" tab for corridor properties that can be changed?

The first thing I see is that you have Datum Links above Datum Links. When a line turns back on itself like that, use a different link code.

I've seen the canned subs do the same thing.  You don't know how the program will react until you try something.

Not sure what code will make the FILL complete in that area.  Vertical edge is not real world for a base and sub base.

It's a surface issue. As @tcorey mentioned, you have datum links on top of datum links. Surfaces can't have more than one elevation at any given location. This means you can't have any overhangs or undercuts in a surface. When you have two links with the same code on top of each other, one of them will be the winning link and one will be the losing link. In your case, it looks like you are using a bottom links overhang correction (which is good). The overhang correction will make it better (less bad?) but may not completely remedy the issue.

Here's an example that looks like it may be similar to yours:
