File save takes hours

My file that I'm working with (locally, but also tried on the server) is taking about an hour to open and 2+ hours to save.  I may have a setting that is faulty or the content within the file may be the culprit.  The file is 23 MB with no xrefs or aerial imagery.  I'm at a loss, but know I can't continue with this if anyone has a suggestion

That is a bit long, but... Civil3D version, OS version,  hardware specs?

By any chance do you have data referenced pipes or surfaces in xrefs attached to the file you are trying to save?

I'm using 2016 for this drawing and don't have trouble with any of my other projects so I don't suspect it's a lack of horsepower on the hardware side.  The computer is on Windows 7 with an Intel i7 processor, 16 gb ram, 64 bit OS

I do have pipe networks and a roadway corridor in the project, but the data is solely within the file and not xref'd.  The corridor is 2800' with a surface created from it if that information is valuable.  This amount of data may slow the file down some but I've certainly had similar or larger projects (and know others have had much larger) without these delays.

Corrupt drawing file? What if you RECOVER the drawing, including xrefs? How about getting it open, turning on/thawing only the layers with objects you want to save and copy/paste into another, fresh dwg?  I do the purge/audit/recover thing on my dwg's pretty regularly to try to keep them clean and in good working order.

I also use that tactic but haven't had luck with this file.  It is certainly corrupt and I've actually moved on to copying the polyline portion of the file to a new one and am recreating the intelligent portion (alignment/profile/etc)
