Existing Storm & Sanitary Model?

Couple of nagging pipe network questions.

1) When you receive a survey, do you create a 3d model of the existing storm and sanitary lines or are you getting these from the surveyor?

2) If #1 is a yes on the model, how do you manage connecting to it since a proposed network cant connect to an existing network, they would have to be the same network, right?

What the surveyor delivers is up to the proposal scope. If they were scoped to build then yes. I typically split and merge the segment directly associated with the new work.

Thank you for the feedback. Doesn't breaking the network screw up the structure labels for the existing?

Personally, I would copy the existing network and strip out the parts that are not involved. set the structure and pipe styles not to plot>> call it proposed and add new pipe and structures to it

Of course you can just add to the existing network with proposed styles.

Be cautious of locking the inverts at the existing connection point from inadvertently moving

In the past, I have had to create the 3d model for existing utilities. To resolve your second question, I always create the existing, then make a copy of it, and make that into my proposed, demoing what is demo'd and adding the new directly to it. In my opinion, that creates the least amount of work, as typically we want to see existing and proposed inverts in the structures that tie the systems together.  The only other way is to create dummy segments that have the proper size and elevation.  But at that point, if you already had it created for the existing system, it is extra work, that in my opinion provides no benefit.

It depends on the scope of the project whether the existing utilities get modeled. Typically on road, site, and airport projects I work on I end up modeling the existing networks. When I need to connect new work to the existing, I usually just create a part at the connection in the proposed network using the values from the existing. If it's a  new gravity sanitary pipe tying into an existing manhole, I'll create a "new" structure in the proposed network. Yes, that leaves two manholes in the modeling, but since that usually means the existing structure is being modified, it's not an issue. Plan production is simple as I can just freeze any layer(s) needed.
