How do you efficiently minimize cut and fill in Civil 3D route selection?
My current workflow to reduce cut and fill is
I start with a draft horizontal alignment and generate an existing ground profile.
I sample profiles at -10 m, centerline, and +10 m offsets to quickly visualize the cross-section without creating a full corridor.
I adjust the alignment and profile iteratively while checking elevation differences between these sampled profiles to avoid deep cuts or high fills.
Once satisfied, I build a corridor (sometimes in short segments), use the Section Editor for fine-tuning, then sample the final alignment and calculate volumes in Excel.
I identify problem areas (e.g., cut >50 m) and attempt to re-route or adjust the profile to reduce earthwork.
This method works well for relatively short sections—say up to 10–15 km—but becomes very time-consuming and mentally exhausting for longer routes.
Are there faster or more systematic techniques or tools within Civil 3D (or plugins) to help with route optimization and minimizing earthwork more efficiently, especially for long routes?
