Earthwork plan calculation Module for Civil 3D. Feedback

Hi all,

We (our development team) have developed a special module for calculating the earthwork plan in Civil 3D. We know that this function is already available in Civil 3D, but we think that what we are offering here something more sophisticated. You can watch the workflow of the module here:

Here I want to get some feedback from users. What do you think about it? Is this module necessary in different countries? We plan to create "style" of this object to create possibility to adapt graphic for each country's standarts.

For Example, this module is very important for Russia and CIS countries - we need to create earthwork plan drawing to get positive conslusion from experts.

Any feedback is important for us.

I've used the Civil cartogramma extension in a previous version as it looked like it would be very useful in my workflow but how wrong I was....!!!!!

None of the volumes were computed correctly (checked using traditional methods) so I had no confidence in the cartogramma outputs and immediately uninstalled it and never used it again.

 

That said I'd be happy to give your module a test if it was available in English

Hi Neil,

Thank you for your feedback and opinion.

We are preparing a trial version. Since the finish of this process I'll publish a link for trial here. Also we are woking on the HELP for this module.

I know all minuses of the Cartogramma Module which has published by Autodesk CIS team, so I've worked with colleagues in our side and created something new.

Here you can see the method of calculation of rectangle prisms - different situations (for example only two) of combinations fill and cut figures from original squares - this is a fragment of help file (Calculation chapter). Do you mean a different method? If yes - tell me please about it. Also you can send me any file, then I'll send you result of calculation for checking.

I can't remember exactly how the Cartogramma module worked but in your screenshot are you only considering a user specified rectangle size and then only considering h1 - h4 at the vertices?

 

The current volume surface method considers all the triangles using vertical prisms rather than rectangles so how does this cartogramma routine deal with the elevations within the area of the rectangles?

Neil,

There are two different methods of calculation:

1) rectangular (square) prisms - I attached the screenshots with examples. This method is simplified. In the CIS countries designers calculate volumes using this method - these are requirements from experts - to make possibility for check result manually.

2) triangular prisms - In this method Cartogramma will calculate summary volumes of cull/fill of all triangles (composition vertical triangular prisms) inside user's defined rectangles. I understand that you are talking about this. Am I correct?

Also, Neil, I have a question. Is it necessary for US (Mexico, Canada - if you know) use this module (all analogues) for calcualting volumes? Have you special requirements in volume's calculation?

Have you any wishes from your region?

Now we are preparing a beta version of the Module.  A bit later I'll publish here a link for download.

@Karadzhaian_Eduard yes method 2 is the better method as it accounts for all areas of the model surface.

 

I'm in the UK so have no idea if these Cartogramma type methods are used in the US etc but I would say that I wouldn't contemplate a manual check on volumes although a reality check (volume divided by area to give approx cut/fill depth) is worthwhile.

 

My intended use for this type of tool would be to produce mass haul diagrams which I currently do using Parcel reports

Neil, in our module there are two methods: 1) triangular (like composite TIN surface breaked up to grid regions);

2) square method (which I described earlier).

I understand that for UK people is necessary to use only the first method, isn't it?

So I hope to get more information about UK standards - computing methods and graphic specification design.
For example, in Russia, we have a special standard called GOST (I attached the picture).

There, you can find all information about graphics calculations and design. These are special requirements for designers in Russia and CIS countries.
Do you have something similar in the UK?

Also can you describe more detail using Parcel's reports to calculate a movement of earth masses?

@Karadzhaian_Eduard considering your example shown I would create parcels based on required phasing of earthworks project etc and use a volume surface to report the volumes on each parcel. I can then determine the surplus of material or deficit in each parcel and then determine an optimal strategy in Excel for moving the suplus to the deficit with a minium haul distance. It is somehat easier for a linear project e.g. road scheme as material will generally move up or down chainage and there is Mass Haul functionality built in to Civil but it is woefully inadequate to be of any practical use and has never been updated - I typically export the volumes to Excel.

 

I am not aware of any specification that determines how the volumes are presented but typically consultants will tend to report a cut fill balance based on existing ground vs proposed finished (!!!) which is patently incorrect so I will create models based on suitable material (after soil/unsuitable removal) and formation level (i.e. bottom of new construction) - I will then use the TIN's to calculate volumes.

 

The GOST standard would be interesting to read but I cannot speak/read Russian
