Draw a line between cogo points based on the point description?

Hello - 

I imported cogo points from a survey. It contains Centerline CL and Edge of pavement EP.

I would like civil 3D to automatically draw a line between all the CL points. The CL points are not in numeric order therefor I don't want to use "Create Line By Point # Range". 

How can I draw a line between cogo points based on the point description?

The Linework Code Set can be configured for Line Start and Line End codes. These would be entered in (ideally) when collecting the field data. So you'd shoot CL B (B for begin, but this can be configured to be any code) and then continue along the line CL, CL, CL, etc until the end, when you'd do CL E (E for end). This tells C3D when to start and end. Or it can start curves, recall points, etc. There's a lot of power here, but it has to be used correctly.

On the survey tab of the Toolspace, you'll see Linework Code Sets at the bottom. Take a look in here and you'll see all sorts of goodies to configure. For more information, and some handy tips, take a look at this video from our youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsmq2kmTI1s

Thank you JasonNM. It looks like my survey point descriptions aren't set up in the proper naming convention (B for begin). I'll have to try that next time.

Contrary to popular belief you don't need to have the B or E codes in the description to get linework. You just need the figures defined, and use the survey database during import. If you just used the import points to drawing then no linework is drawn. You must import the points to the Survey Database to process the linework.

Thank you rl_jackson, I'll have to look into that. I imported my points by using "Points From File". I'll have to look into how to use the Survey Database for importing.

If none of these approaches suite you and you were to consider third party add-ons, DotSoft's C3DTools has a quick Figure AutoConnect that lets you simply select the CogoPoints you want to connect, then specify one (or more) description fragments.  For example with this situation:

You could simply pick a point in the NW or SE and tell it POS,STA,TREE and it would draw all three FeatureLines.  There is also a more configurable Point AutoDraw that lets you setup reusable description fragments and more.

For all you folks out there that work for companies with I AM NOT SPENDING ANY MORE MONEY FOR SOFTWARE slogans:  Time is money.  Saving time is making money, in most cases.  I guess "billable hours" would be an exception.  My point is that using either Terry's Dotsoft tools or Jeff's Sincpac-3D tools can be a time-saver.  Both tools sets not necessary a replacement of the other but in addition to time saving processes.
