dng Xref create "DWG" copies when open the main file

Hello,

I am currently have issue with some dgn files which I attached as Xref into my Civil 3d file (Main File).

Every time I open this main file, it automatically generate "dwg" copies for some of the dgn references (only a few, not all reference files). Since I have a lot reference files attached, it took me forever to open it.

Does anyone know what is going on and how to fix this?

Thank you

Hi @qw3275!

As far as I understood, attaching a Microstation DGN file creates a DWG in the folder (using the command DGNATTACH -so using a DGN file as an XREF).

This issue is specific to a type of DWG file. For example, when a DGN file is a Design Reference, the file exists as a table of contents file, and the referenced files are chapters. Therefore, if the DGN Design Reference and the referenced DGN are in the same location, attaching the DGN file will find the referenced DGN and create a DWG file instead.

You may have two options here:

  1. Use the referenced file instead of the Design Reference.
  2. When making changes to the Design reference, erase the created DWG file before re-opening the DWG with the attached Design Reference, it will create a new DWG with the changes.

Thank you @Elina.P  for details on a somewhat obscure subject. This type of info can be hard to find.

You say "...the DGN Design Reference and the referenced DGN"

I am unclear on the difference. Which command creates each?

Thank you very much. I detach the reference in the design file(DGN file) and it stop creating DWG copies.
